Corporate Carbon and Water Footprint Calculations

Today, companies attach great importance to calculating their carbon and water footprints in order to measure and reduce their environmental impact in line with their sustainability goals. The carbon footprint expresses the total greenhouse gas emissions that a business releases directly or indirectly into the atmosphere and is usually calculated in CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). The water footprint shows an organization's water consumption and impact on water resources and analyzes freshwater use.

These calculations are carried out in accordance with international standards such as ISO 14064, GHG Protocol and ISO 14046. While the carbon footprint is measured based on factors such as energy consumption, logistics, production processes and supply chain, the water footprint includes the amount of water used directly as well as the "hidden water" consumed in production processes.

Corporate carbon and water footprint calculations guide companies to develop more sustainable business models, increase operational efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance. They are also a critical step in reducing costs and building an environmentally friendly brand image through carbon and water-saving strategies.

Carbon and water footprint calculations are becoming increasingly important in Türkiye and are supported by various regulations. In line with the Paris Agreement and the 2053 Net Zero Carbon Target, businesses are encouraged to measure and reduce their carbon emissions. Within the scope of the Regulation on Monitoring and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, carbon footprint reporting is mandatory for large-scale companies operating in certain sectors.

While there is no comprehensive legal obligation in Türkiye regarding water footprint, national policies such as the Water Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan encourage the measurement and reduction of water consumption. Sustainable management of water resources is increasingly on the agenda, especially in the industry, agriculture and energy sectors.

In Türkiye, businesses use international standards such as ISO 14064, GHG Protocol and ISO 14046 for carbon and water footprint calculations. In addition, institutions such as TÜBİTAK and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change provide support for projects related to carbon and water management. Carbon footprint reporting has become critical, especially within the scope of the Green Deal Action Plan, due to new regulations such as the Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for companies exporting to Europe.

To adapt to this process, companies are turning to developing strategies such as renewable energy use, energy efficiency projects, water recycling and sustainable production techniques.
